Serenity Prayer

This prayer was written by Reinhold Niebulhr.

God, grant me the Serenity
to accept the things I cannot change.
The courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Reinhold Niebulhr

Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is;

Not as I would have it;
Trusting that You will make all things right
if I surrender to Your will;

So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with You forever in the next.
AMEN

Reinhold Niebulhr

This could be a good prayer to say when things are changing in your life and you cannot control what is going on. Not just for addictions. Yes, we can get addicted to other stuff other than drugs and alcohol. When the storm of life is going on, maybe use this as a model prayer for that.

The Serenity Prayer is a well-known and oft-quoted prayer that has provided comfort, guidance, and inspiration to millions of people around the world. It is a simple yet powerful reminder of the importance of acceptance, courage, and wisdom in our daily lives.

The Serenity Prayer was written by theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in the early 1930s, and it was first published in 1941. Niebuhr was a prominent Christian thinker and social activist who was deeply concerned with the problems of modern society. He wrote the prayer as a reflection on the challenges and complexities of life, and as a way to offer solace and support to those who were struggling.

The Serenity Prayer has become particularly associated with 12-step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, where it is recited at the beginning and end of meetings. However, its message and insights are relevant to anyone who is seeking to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.

The first part of the prayer, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,” is a call for acceptance and surrender. It reminds us that there are many things in life that are beyond our control, and that we must learn to accept them with grace and equanimity. This can be difficult, especially when we are faced with challenges or adversity, but it is an essential part of living a peaceful and contented life.

The second part of the prayer, “Courage to change the things I can,” is a call to action. It reminds us that there are also many things in life that we can influence and change, and that we must have the courage and determination to take action when necessary. This can be challenging, as change often involves risk and uncertainty, but it is also essential if we are to grow and develop as individuals.

The third and final part of the prayer, “And wisdom to know the difference,” is a call for discernment and insight. It reminds us that we must cultivate wisdom and understanding in order to distinguish between the things we can and cannot change. This requires self-reflection, introspection, and a willingness to learn and grow.

Taken together, the Serenity Prayer offers a powerful framework for living a balanced, meaningful, and fulfilling life. It reminds us to accept the things we cannot change, to have the courage to change the things we can, and to cultivate the wisdom to know the difference. Whether we are facing personal challenges, social problems, or global crises, the Serenity Prayer offers a source of comfort, guidance, and inspiration.
